Head Spa vs Japanese Head Spa: What Is the Difference?

If you have been searching for a Head Spa in Shrewsbury, you may have noticed several different terms being used - Head Spa, Japanese Head Spa, scalp spa and scalp treatment among them. While they are closely related, the experience can vary considerably depending on the salon, the techniques used and how much attention is given to the scalp itself. At Aluna Head Spa in Shrewsbury, our treatments are Japanese-inspired and combine detailed scalp care with deep cleansing, massage, conditioning, nano steam and relaxation. Every appointment is designed around both the health and comfort of your scalp and the opportunity to genuinely switch off. So what exactly is a Head Spa, what makes a Japanese-inspired Head Spa different, and which treatment should you choose?

At Aluna Head Spa in Shrewsbury, our treatments are Japanese-inspired and combine detailed scalp care with deep cleansing, massage, conditioning, nano steam and relaxation. Every appointment is designed around both the health and comfort of your scalp and the opportunity to genuinely switch off. So what exactly is a Head Spa, what makes a Japanese-inspired Head Spa different, and which treatment should you choose?

What is a Head Spa?

A Head Spa is a treatment focused primarily on the scalp, hair and the experience of deep relaxation.

Unlike a traditional salon appointment where cleansing the hair is usually simply one stage before cutting, colouring or styling, a Head Spa makes the scalp and cleansing ritual the centre of the experience.

Treatments can vary between providers, but a carefully designed Head Spa may combine scalp assessment, deep cleansing, exfoliation, massage, conditioning, steam, hydration and soothing water-based techniques.

At Aluna Head Spa in Shrewsbury, every 60-minute core treatment includes an AI-assisted visual scalp analysis, deep cleansing and exfoliation, scalp massage, a conditioning treatment, nano steam, post-treatment scalp analysis and a light blow-dry.

The initial analysis allows Helen to take a closer look at areas such as visible build-up, oil levels and the general condition of the scalp before beginning the treatment. A second analysis at the end gives you an opportunity to compare what can be seen before and after your appointment.

This is a visual scalp-care assessment rather than a medical diagnosis, but it allows the treatment to feel far more considered and personal than simply washing and conditioning the hair.

For many clients, however, the scalp care is only one part of the appeal. The combination of warm water, massage, steam, quiet surroundings and time away from everyday distractions is what makes a Head Spa feel so different from an ordinary salon visit.

What makes a Japanese-inspired Head Spa different?

The term Japanese Head Spa generally describes a scalp-first treatment influenced by Japanese approaches to cleansing, massage, relaxation and ritualised hair care.

There is no single treatment sequence used by every Head Spa, which means the experience can differ significantly from one provider to another.

At Aluna, our approach is Japanese-inspired rather than an attempt to reproduce one rigid treatment formula. The experience combines professional scalp care with warm-water cleansing, massage, carefully selected products and an environment designed to encourage complete relaxation.

One of the biggest differences is the amount of time and attention given to the scalp.

Rather than shampooing being a quick stage of another service, cleansing, exfoliation and scalp massage become important parts of the appointment themselves.

Your hair is cleansed during the treatment, so there is no need to wash it immediately beforehand. Conditioning and hydration are also incorporated according to the treatment you choose.

And you will not need to leave Aluna with soaking wet hair. Every core Head Spa treatment finishes with a light blow-dry.

The experience also becomes progressively more indulgent as you move through Aluna's treatment durations.

The 90-minute treatments include the complete 60-minute core experience together with an enriching hot drink, Gold-tier product range, extended scalp massage, a sound-bath introduction and face mask.

The 120-minute treatments include the complete core experience together with an enriching hot drink, Diamond-tier product range, scalp and upper-body massage, a full sound-bath experience and organic facial.

This means your appointment can be anything from a complete one-hour Head Spa treatment to a two-hour scalp, hair and relaxation ritual.

How long does a Head Spa take — and how much does it cost?

At Aluna Head Spa, every treatment pathway is available as a 60, 90 or 120-minute experience.

The Ritual Head Spa currently costs £75 for 60 minutes, £95 for 90 minutes and £120 for 120 minutes.

The Balancing, Hair Growth and Bond Repair Head Spa treatments currently cost £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 minutes and £125 for 120 minutes.

Because prices can change, our live Booksy profile will always show the current treatment prices and appointment availability.

Which Head Spa should I choose?

If this is your first Head Spa, the Ritual Head Spa is our signature experience and the treatment we would usually suggest as the perfect introduction.

If your scalp feels oily, congested, sensitive or unsettled, the Balancing Head Spa provides more targeted scalp care.

If you are concerned about shedding or slow-growing hair, the Hair Growth Head Spa provides cosmetic scalp care designed to support a healthier-feeling scalp environment. It is not a medical hair-loss treatment and does not diagnose or treat conditions such as alopecia.

If your hair feels dry, weakened, coloured, heat-styled or overprocessed, the Bond Repair Head Spa combines the relaxation of a Head Spa with more restorative hair care.

And if you are still unsure, you do not need to arrive knowing exactly what your scalp needs. Helen begins every appointment with a consultation and visual scalp analysis before guiding you through the treatment.
